大家也許不知道, 李羅傑斯 之前在日本住了七年, 是 cyclingnewsasia 的一位自由撰稿員. 今年加入了 富士亞洲車隊, 又很巧的被 cyclingnewsasia 派到台灣開發市場, 於是一週前正式搬來台灣. 更巧的是他們公司的定點也是台中, 與車隊大本營很近. 這樣練車也就更方便配合了. 來到了台灣, 人生新的一個章節.
李羅傑斯 在比賽之於, 也需報導賽事. 我想身於 出賽選手之一, 他的資訊應該是最有臨場感的. 剛剛看了他的報導, 也深感職業作者的文筆真的不同一般人. ... 讓我感覺我英文像二年級生寫的. 冏.
我挑了我最喜歡的兩段翻了一下:
"It (time trial) doesn’t matter if it’s 1km or 20, it all hurts. It’s all on the limit, on the rivet, full gas – call it what you want, there’s no hiding place when it’s you against the clock, no gap in the air to dive into, no wheel in front to offer sanctuary from a February spent training not quite hard enough. Pull your straps tight as they will go, squeeze into that skinsuit, prime those $3000 carbon discs, it won’t make any difference if you haven’t got the legs . . ."
個人計時賽不管是一公里, 還是二十, 都很痛苦, 都在極限邊緣,釘子尖上掙扎, 都是全力. 二月不足的訓練, 在計時賽裏是沒有安全的縫隙去躲藏的, 更沒有前面的後輪給你避難 - 只有你和時間在比賽. 將鞋帶繫緊到極點, 將身體擠進緊身裝內, 準備好那一組三千美金的車輪. 但最終現實是殘酷, 如果你沒有腳力, 這些都不足道.
"But the time trial is more than just the engine – even moreso, it’s about the mind. The body begs for release, for liberation from the strains, but the mind has to override the demands. You almost have to want the pain. To welcome it. There has to be something there, an anger, or an inadequacy in the personality, that will allow that level of masochism. A curious thing, the racing cyclist, a very well balanced athlete – a chip on each shoulder!"
個人計時賽除了腳力以外, 還更需要念力! 當你的身體在求你放了他一馬, 求你解放他吧, 你的意念要壓制這些要求. 你幾乎要歡迎苦痛, 甚至渴望那種受虐的感覺. 也許是恨, 也許是人格上的缺失, 有這種火才能將你昇華至受虐狂的境界 - 這是單車選手必備的奇特個性 - 好似眼裡總是有一粒沙, 肩膀上總是有個煩人的小東西, 在那兒天天煩你, 刺激你, 又恨又痛, 但眨也眨不掉, 彈也彈不走.
